Anzac Day

This week our children have been remembering the soldiers who bravely fought for their country. Jon in Year 4 has written a poem amount the images he sees when he thinks about Anzac Day.

Sad and sorrow,

Soldiers cover the air as poppies droop to the ground,

People crowd the area, not a sound to be made, as voices haunt the air,

Crosses are everywhere, as cries come from the sky.

Cultural Celebration Day

3rd April 2012

Don’t forget our Cultural Celebration Day tomorrow. We would love parents to come and join us. We have a special assembly in the hall at 11.40am where our brand new mural will be unveiled and blessed by Mr. Jerry Samuels. Our Kapa Haka group will perform as will our choir and a local Togan Cultural group. Following on from the assembly you are welcome to join your children for a shared lunch and to visit them in their classrooms in the afternoon. The children have been encouraged to wear national dress, it would be great to see some of our parents in national dress too. We look forward to seeing you tomorrow.

Getting Creative

27th March 2012

The children from Room 25 have been getting creative. For homework the children were asked to create a cultural symbol and to explain what it represents and how they made it. This tiki, made from Cortina parts, was absolutely stunning and will be on display in the school library. Make sure you go in and have a look.

The Wind

The wind grabs the rain and pushes it away so it can enter its stormy dark territory.

To concentrate on his dangerous, terrible nightmares to destroy the wet, cold rain.

Mish Mash Television

19th March 2012

We had great excitement today when the crew from Mish Mash television came to film at the school. The children had the opportunity to talk to them about: our cultural display in the hall; the murals at our school; the writing we have been working on; our plans for enviro schools  and Room 17 shared a waiata. The school will be featured on the programme on the 3rd, 4th and possibly 5th of April. More details will be included in the newsletter closer to the time.

Sharing Our Culture

14th March 2012

This term the children are looking at the diverse cultures we each bring to our school. Shina and her mum Uma were kind enough to come and share their national dress with the children in Room 11. Uma demonstrated how to put on a sari and Shina told the children about how she wears her sari on festival days.

Every child in the school will be given the opportunity to share their national costume when we hold our Cultural Celebration Day on the 4th April. Make sure you put the date in your diary.
