On Friday the 18th of May our Year 2/3 students were privileged to have Kelly Brazier, a New Zealand Rugby Sevens player who competed at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games earlier in the year come in and speak to them. Kelly told the students a bit about herself and then the students were able to ask Kelly some questions.

This is some of the information we found out;

How old were you when you started playing rugby 7s and what made you choose it?
  • I started rugby first at 5 years old and started because I have a big brother that I followed around and played because he did.
How many tries have you scored during your career?
  • I got quite a few when I was younger but on the 7s tour I have scored 53.  Our team has the world record holder who has scored 200.
What makes a good team?
  • Teamwork - I’m one of 12 players so we all have to do our jobs.  Our ‘core role’ which is giving each player a specific job means that we all know what to do and when.
How many international games have you played?
  • For 7s I’ve played in 24 tournament - each has 6 games.  And I have played 35 Tests for the Black Ferns.
How many medals have you won?
  • I think about 20 for the 7s plus others.  I think I have 100 in total.
What was it like at the commonwealth games?
  • Pretty cool - very special.  A huge buffet with huge tables, free McDonalds, free drinks.  We got to play in front of 40,000 people.
How did you feel when you scored the winning try, after having to run 80m.
  • Pretty tired.  Once I got my breath back I was pretty stoked.
How often do you have to train?
  • We train 6 days a week - I'm at the gym by 830am and then we do skills training, have a couple hours break and then we are usually finished by 330pm.
