Morning after the storm
by Isla Year 3

Look at the fluffy white-greyish clouds in the sky…
That’s how I know it’s the morning after the storm.
I can see little blue gaps through partings in the sky…
That’s how I know it’s the morning after the storm.
Can you see little shavings from branches off the trees?
Scattered on the soggy ground…
That’s how I know it’s the morning after the storm.
I can see the wide puddles as high as my feet…
That’s how I know it’s the morning after the storm.
Can you hear the foggy, whistling wind blowing around you?
That’s how I know its the morning after the storm.

WOW have you thought about all the FUN things that you can do when you’re a member of the Walking School Bus. As well as keeping fit, walking with friends, Mums and Dads meeting new people (adults and children), getting tokens for every 25 walks you do you can also now SCOOTER  to school one day a week! Today as it was the end of the Term 1 EVERYONE on the Green Bus (Park Road) had balloons, lollipops, and also music to walk with as they walked or scooted to school. It was so much fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AND…A big thanks goes out to all those parents who support this activity either by sending their child on the bus, or walking with the children.

How about joining up with one of the Walking School Buses or offering to assist as a volunteer on one of the bus/scooter routes?

Room 3 and 4 have been learning about how important ANZAC day is to New Zealanders. We know that those soldiers who went to war gave up their lives for us and we are very thankfulWe made ANZAC biscuits and poppies to take to the residents at Lexham Park today. We walked down and sang to the residents then gave them a poppy and ANZAC biscuit.

We wanted to give JOY to the residents of Lexham Park and we know by their smiles we did that!

17th April

The children at Katikati Primary School are very environmentally aware. The senior school students are currently involved with rejuvenating a gully area at the back of the school with the aim of creating an environmental learning environment for all of the school to enjoy. Their first job was to clear pathways, which had become overrun with weeds, in preparation for planting which will create micro habitats. The children have been creating habitats for some of the native creatures, one of their first creations being Te Weta Whare. The children used natural resources they found at home to make suitable shelters for our wetas. As the project continues to take shape a hangi pit and herb garden will become part of the rejuvenation project. More native trees will be planted and windfall trees will be used by the children for hut building. The children are looking forward to being able to use this natural resource and we’re sure the wetas will appreciate the changes too!

Being a rural school, Katikati Primary School has a wide range of animal visitors each year. Last year our lamb crèche was a big hit with the children. This year Easter came early when Mrs. Burtenshaw brought her baby chicks to visit the school. The children were delighted as the brood of 20 visited the classrooms around the school (Mrs. Burtenshaw is still trying to figure out where they all came from!) The children were able to handle the chicks and had lots of questions to ask about them. The chicks also became the focus for the day’s writing.

I hope you all enjoy the Easter break with your children. School will reopen on Wednesday the 3rd April.

21st March 2013

Our Senior School children had a great time at their swimming sports. Thanks to all the parents who came along to support and good luck to all those children who are going through to the Northern Cluster competition on Monday the 25th March.

Swimming sports day, I’m a nervous wreck

Togs, towel, goggles check

What shall I enter, when will I know?

No time to think, on your marks, get set go!

Fingers together, elbows up high

Head facing down, breath to the side

Splash goes the water, loud cheers the crowd

As I hop from the pool, I’ve done myself proud

Back to the shade, towel myself dry

I’ll be back next year for another try

18th March 2011

Now that we have finally had some rain, the children have taken the opportunity to write about the rainbows that they can see. Here is what Sean (Year 4) in Room 11 had to say.

Slowly the colourful rainbow started to vanish into the Kaimais.                                                                                                                                               It was as colourful as unicorn’s dust.                                                                                                                                                                                                   The clouds slowly moved on top.                                                                                                                                                                                                              It looked like the clouds were robbing the work of art.

So what was Superman doing in our school library today?

At Katikati Primary School we want every child in the school to be achieving at or above the National Standards. As part of our commitment to this goal, Mrs. Bibby has introduced a new initiative called Waiting For Superman to encourage children to read. The children are part of a special club which meets before school in the library. The children are encouraged to read for 15 minutes before school and will receive stickers and certificates for their efforts. They will be supported by Mrs. Bibby and some of our support staff as well as children from Katikati College. The children will have access to a range of books including some brand new ones that haven’t been put out on general display yet.

The children were very excited to meet Superman and Lois Lane today, as well as sharing in a special Superman cake and morning tea.

The Waiting For Superman Club is keen to include adult volunteers. Call the school office (5490105) if you love kids, love books and love being at school at 8.15 a.m. You never know- you might become someone’s superhero!
