On Friday 6th April Katikati Primary School was privileged to have Timo Tagaloa, a New Zealand born Samoan rugby union player and ex All-Black, visit our school to take a rugby coaching clinic with a group of 20 Year 5 and 6 students.

Timo’s visit began with a powhiri welcoming him to the Katiakti school community. He then took a group of students through a rugby coaching clinic which involved activities to develop ball skills, tactics and team work.

Timo’s then talked with the students about his background and journey to being a top sports person.

In the afternoon Timo was the main speaker for the Senior School Assembly. He spoke to the students and parent guests about PURPOSE. P = PASSION for whatever you choose to commit to do, U = UNSELFISHNESS is the hall mark of people of character: sports people need to be persons of character to succeed in sport and in life,  R = RISKS are a part of every journey if you’re serious about achieving your goals, P = PERSEVERANCE is paramount as you learn the skills and get the experience needed to excel, O = OUTCOMES are only possible when you have the right attitudes and make the right choices, S = SET BACKS help you to grow in character as well as in developing the skills needed for your particular sport,  E = EXPERIENCE happens over time. It takes time to develop the physical skills and the character needed to be a person of PURPOSE.

Sports is one of the ways for a student to be able to enter college. There are a lot of unfortunate people in the world, some of them do not even get the chance to study. I really love that there are people who are doing what they can to help. Introducing rugby to these children might even make a difference in the future. We never know, maybe one of these kids has the talent to be the next big star.

This player stands between the second and third bases and is expected to take care of those balls that end up within that specific area
