On Tuesday we went to the Uretara Stream as part of our unit about Sustainability. We learnt about the water quality of the stream and what insects, critters and other living things live in and around the stream. We found out the water temperature was 21.5 degrees by measuring it with an air temperature. Kate, our wonderful instructor told us that the temperature was quite warm for the animals that lived in the stream. We also tested the PH levels of the stream and found out that it was 6.5. Which means the stream is close to perfect as we would ideally like to see a level of 7. We found lots of bugs around the stream. We found out they need lots of hanging plants to survive. We therefore began to have an understanding of why planting plants around our waterways is so important. Our trip was very fun and informative.
